Bear Ear Flaps Hat

Materials:

8mm hook

6mm hook

4mm hook

~75 yds of bulky yarn for body of hat

~15 yds of bulky yarn for snout

~ 5 yds of worsted weight yarn for eyes and nose

Tapestry needle

 

Abbreviations: 

MR=magic ring

dc=double crochet

hdc=half double crochet

sc=single crochet

sc2tog=single crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)

ss=slip stitch

Snout Pattern: 

*Using tan bulky weight yarn and a 6mm hook*

Rnd 1: 6 sc into MR, join with ss. (6)

Rnd 2: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, join with ss. (8)

Rnd 3: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next 2 stitches, sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next 2 stitches, join with ss. (12)

Rnd 4: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next 3 stitches, sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in next 3 stitches, join with ss. (18)

Rnd 5: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in next 3 stitches, sc in next 6 stitches, 2 sc in next 3 stitches, sc in next stitch, join with ss. (24)

FO leaving a long tail for sewing the nose onto the snout. Wait to sew the snout to the hat until you have attached the nose to the snout.  

Nose:

*Using black worsted weight yarn and a 4mm hook*

Rnd 1: 6 sc into MR, join with ss. (6)

Rnd 2: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, 2 sc in next 2 stitches, sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next 2 stitches, sc in last stitch, join with ss. (10)

Rnd 3: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next 2 stitches, sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in next 2 stitches, sc in last stitch, join with ss. (14, for baby size skip to Rnd 5)

Rnd 4: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next 2 stitches, sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next 2 stitches, sc in next 2 stitches, join with ss. (18)

Rnd 5: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join with ss. (18, 14- for baby size) SEE PICTURE BELOW

FO leaving an extra long tail for sewing. Stuff the nose firmly. Turn the snout so that the seam face up (it will be largely covered by the nose). Place the nose so that it is centered just beneath the the final row of the snout. The bottom of the nose should fall atop Rnd 4 (Rnd 2 for baby size) of the snout. -SEE PICTURES BELOW

Using the long tail sew the nose to the snout, but DO NOT FO. Use the remaining tail to embroider the mouth. I like to place the mouth slightly off center with one side turning up slightly more than the other. SEE PICTURE BELOW

Stuff the snout firmily, but do not over stuff. Use the tail to attach the snout to the body of the hat aligning the bottom of the snout atop Rnd 2 of the hat. SEE PICTURE BELOW

Ears (make 2):

*Using same color of bulky weight yarn as the hat with a 6mm hook*

Rnd 1: 6 sc into MR, join with ss. (6)

Rnd 2: ch 1, 2 sc in same stitch as join, 2 sc in each stitch around, join with ss. (12)

Rnd 3: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, 2 sc in next stitch, *sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch*, repeat *to* around, join with ss. (18)

Rnd 4-5: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join with ss. (18)

Rnd 6: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, sc2tog, *sc in next stitch, sc2tog*, repeat *to* around, join with ss. (12) SEE PICTURE BELOW

FO leaving a long tail for sewing. Lay the hat flat. Cup ears forward slightly and attach them on each side so that the top edges fall just below Rnd 3 and the bottom edge of the ear sits in the middle of Rnd 5. SEE PICTURES BELOW

Eyes: 

*using balck worsted weight yarn and a 4mm hook*

8 hdc into MR, join with ss, FO leaving a long tail for sewing. (8) SEE PICTURE BELOW

Use a scrap of white yarn to embroider a large highlight and small highlight on each eye. SEE PICTURE BELOW

Weave in ends except for long tail. Use the long tail to sew the eyes to the hat so that the bottom of the eyes sit atop Rnd 7 leaving 6 stitches between the eyes. SEE PICTURE BELOW

Weave in all remaining ends.
