Chunky Pine Cone Hat

Materials:

8mm hook

~300 yds of bulky weight (5) yarn 

Tapestry needle

4-5 green worsted weight yarn scraps (each about 8” long)

 

Abbreviations:

fsc=foundation single crochet

sc=single crochet

hdc=half double crochet

dc=double crochet

htc=half treble crochet

tc=treble crochet

ss=slip stitch

ch=chain

Size Note: This hat can be made to fit adults/teens, children, toddlers and babies. Size adjustments are listed in parenthesis in the the order (adult/teen, child, toddler, baby) where applicable. All other pattern instructions should be followed as written.

 

Pattern:

Rnd 1: fsc 48 (44, 40, 36), join with ss. 

 

Rnd 2: standing dc, skip next stitch, (dc, ch1, dc) in next stitch, skip next stitch, *dc in next stitch, skip next stitch, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next stitch, skip next stitch,* repeat *to* around SEE PICTURE BELOW, join with ss. 

Rnd 3: ch 2, *(4 dc, htc, tc) down next dc, (tc, htc, 4 dc) up next dc (SEE PICTURE 3), ss in next dc*, repeat *to* around, join with ss SEE PICTURES BELOW

Rnd 4: (standing dc, ch 1, dc) in same stitch as join (the pairs of dc will fall between the crocodile stitches for this round), dc in next ch 1 space (in the middle of the next crocodile stitch),*(dc, ch 1, dc) in next dc from Rnd 2 (the pairs of dc will fall between the crocodile stitches for this round), dc in next ch 1 space (in the middle of the next crocodile stitch)* SEE PICTURE BELOW repeat *to* around, join with ss. 

Rnd 5: repeat Rnd 3 SEE PICTURE BELOW

Rnd 6: (standing dc, ch 1, dc) in same stitch as join (the pairs of dc will fall between the crocodile stitches for this round), dc in next ch 1 space (in the middle of the next crocodile stitch),*(dc, ch 1, dc) in next dc from Rnd 4 (the pairs of dc will fall between the crocodile stitches for this round), dc in next ch 1 space (in the middle of the next crocodile stitch)* repeat *to* around, join with ss.

Rnd 16: ch 1,* sc  in same stitch as join between next crocodile stitches, sc in the middle of the next crocodile stitches,* repeat *to* around, join with ss. (24)

 

Rnd 17: ch 1, sc2tog around join with ss. (12)

 

Rnd 18: ch 1, *sc in next 2 stitches, sc2tog*, repeat *to* around, join with ss. (9)

 

Rnd 19-22: ch 1, sc around, join with ss. (9)

 

Rnd 23: ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog, join with ss. (8)

 

Rnd 24: ch 1, sc around, join with ss. (8) SEE PICTURE BELOW

Rnd 25: ch 4, ss in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, leave last ch unworked and sc in same sc as join, sc in remaining stitches around, join with ss to sc in same stitch as join from previous round skipping over the ch section (this will become the twig for the pine needle fringe). Rnd 26: ch 1, sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog, join with ss, FO. (7) 

Finishing:

Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle. Use 4-5 green worsted weight yarn scraps (varied colors can be quite nice so don’t stress if they are different greens ;) ) to create the pine needle fringe at the end of the twig. SEE PICTURES BELOW
