Fleur De Lis Granny Shawl

Materials:

5mm hook

~1200 yds of light weight yarn (Pictured: Lion Brand Mandala Yarn in the colorway "Thunderbird")

Tapestry needle

Stitch marker if desired (I use bobby pins)

Abbreviations: 

MR=magic ring

Standing dc=standing double crochet

dc=double crochet

ch=chain

sc=single crochet

Picot: chain indicated number of chains then ss into sc at the foot of the ch (SEE PICTURES 3-10 in Pattern section) to form a loop.

FO=fasten off

Gauge and Size Note: For this pattern, gauge can be altered easily. This shawl can be made using any appropriate yarn/hook combination. It can be worked to the desired size by increasing or decreasing the number of rows completed in order to achieve the size desired. The border instructions will be followed in the same way regardless or size or number of rows. 

 

Pattern:

Row 1:  Place (standing dc, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into MR, turn. SEE PICTURE BELOW

NOTE: Mark the point of the shawl (ch 2 space) with stitch marker if desired. Move the stitch marker to the next ch 2 space as you complete rows.

Row 2: Place (standing dc, 2 dc) in turning dc, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 space, ch 1, 3 dc in last dc of row, turn. SEE PICTURE BELOW

Row 3: Place (standing dc, 2 dc) in turning dc, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 space, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 space, ch 1, 3 dc in last dc of row, turn. SEE PICTURE BELOW

Row 4: Place (standing dc, 2 dc) in turning dc, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch 1 space, ch 1*, repeat *to* in each ch 1 space across 1st edge, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 space, ch 1, repeat *to* across 2nd edge, 3 dc in last dc of row, turn. SEE PICTURE BELOW

Row 5-?: repeat Row 4 until the shawl reaches the desired size (the border will be worked the same way regardless of number of rows), FO.

 

Border:

Row 1: ch 1, *sc in next 3 dc, sc in next ch 1 space*, repeat *to* along 1st edge of shawl until you reach the last 3 dc cluster before the point, sc in last 3 dc of 1st edge, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch 2 space at the point, repeat *to* up the next edge, sc in each of the last 3 dc, turn. SEE PICTURES BELOW

Row 2: ch 1, sc in 1st sc, sc in next sc placing (a ch 4 picot, a ch 5 picot, and a ch 4 picot) in this stitch -SEE PICTURES BELOW- *sc in next 4 sc placing (a ch 4 picot, a ch 5 picot, and a ch 4 picot NOTE: the picot sequence will always fall in the center sc above each 3 dc cluster EXCEPT at the point where a modified picot sequence will fall in the ch 2 space of the point) in the last sc of set*, repeat *to* until reaching the point, sc in next 2 sc, [2 sc placing (a ch 4 picot, a ch 5 picot, a ch 6 picot, a ch 5 picot, and a ch 4 picot) in the 2nd sc, sc]  in ch 2 space -SEE PICTURE 15- , sc in next 3 sc placing (a ch 4 picot, a ch 5 picot, and a ch 4 picot) in the 3rd, repeat *to* along the 2nd edge of the shawl, sc in the last sc of row, FO.
