Happy Heart Amigurumi

Gauge: The gauge for this project can be adjusted to suit most yarns. I used a 4mm hook with worsted weight (4 medium) yarn, specifically, Big Twist Premium, for the samples pictured. Be sure to select a hook that will produce stitches tight enough to contain stuffing without gapping. I recommend dropping down a couple of hook sizes from the recommended hook listed on the package if you choose a yarn that is not worsted weight.

Materials:

4mm hook

tapestry needle

scissors

2 9mm safety eyes

bon bon skein of yarn (less than 28 yds)

5 yds of contrasting color yarn *for optional wings*

contrasting yarn scrap for smile.

Abbreviations:

*pattern uses US terms*

Heart:

Important pattern notes: **PLEASE READ** To make the heart you will first need to make the two humps on the top. The humps are made separately, but joined using the working yarn from the second hump. Do NOT FO after making the 2nd hump! Instead, continue on to the ” joining the humps” section of the pattern. Also, if you choose to include the wings, be sure to have them completed before beginning the heart as they will be added before the point of the heart is completed for sake of ease. ;)

Humps (make 2, DO NOT FO ON 2ND HUMP- see pattern notes above):

Round 1: MR, 6 sc, join with ss, ch 1, (6 sc)

Round 2: 2sc in each sc around, join with ss, ch 1 (12 sc)

Round 3: *1 sc, 2 sc in next sc * around, join with ss, ch 1 (18 sc)

Round 4-6: sc in each sc around, join with ss, FO on first hump only *SEE PICTURE BELOW*

The hump 1 on the left has been FO. The hump 2 on the right still has working yarn attached.

Joining the Humps

Set the 1st hump (the one you fastened off) to the right of the 2nd hump (the one with your working yarn) with their seams touching *SEE PICTURE BELOW*

Line the seams up so that they are touching and the 1st stitches on both humps line up side by side.

Round 7: ch 1, using your working yarn from hump 2, sc into 1st sc from seam of round 6 of hump 1 *SEE PICTURE A*. Sc in each of the next 14 sc, leave next 3 sc of hump 1 unworked. Leave the 3 sc opposite these stitches on hump 2 unworked as well. Join your yarn back to hump 2 with a sc in the 4th sc from the seam of hump 2 *SEE PICTURE B*. Ignore the 6 unworked sc- you will join this later from the inside. sc in next 14 sc around on hump 2. Join with ss to initial sc (on hump 1). (30 sc) PICTURES BELOW

Use the working yarn from hump 2 to stitch into the 1st stitch of hump 1. This is the stitch you will join with at the end of the round (mark stitch if desired).

Line the seams up so that they are touching and the 1st stitches on both humps line up side by side.

Figure 5 Use the working yarn from hump 2 to stitch into the 1st stitch of hump 1. This is the stitch you will join with at the end of the round (mark stitch if desired).

Figure 6 I have marked the skipped stitches above with plain markers. The stitches connected by the markers will be connected later to form the “valley” between the humps of the heart. The stitch rejoining  hump 2 will be placed in the stitch marked by the colored marker (bottom).

Point of the Heart

Round 8: ch 1, beginning in the same stitch as join *sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc2tog over next 4 sc, sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog, sc in next 6 * repeat around, join with ss to initial ss, ch 1. (26 sc)

Round 9: sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc2tog over next 4 sc, sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog, sc in next 5 sc, join with ss to initial sc, ch1. (22 sc) *SEE PICTURE BELOW*

Now that the humps are joined, rounds are worked as regular rounds.

PAUSE YOUR WORK ON THE POINT OF THE HEART AND COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING:

1: CLOSE THE CENTER OF HUMPS FROM THE INSIDE -USE A TAIL LEFT INSIDE TO SC OR SEW INTO  ADJACENT SC FROM BOTH HUMPS TO CLOSE, FO (4 STITCHES) *SEE PICTURE BELOW*

I have marked the skipped stitches. These are the stitches you will join. You can sc or sew  through the pairs of marked stitches to join. You can use one of the tails left inside already or you can add yarn or thread if you wish. Just make sure that you work on the inside of the heart and that you close securely.

2: INSERT 9MM SAFETY EYES 4-5 STITCHES APART BETWEEN ROUNDS 8 AND 9 *SEE PICTURE BELOW*

Locate rounds 8 and 9. The eyes will be placed on the line that runs between these rounds. Find the center of the round (this does NOT have to be exact ;) ). Skip 2 stitches to the left and place one eye. Skip 2 stitches to the right of the center stitch and place the second eye. Don’t forget to secure with washers!!

3: USING YOUR HOOK, PULL THE TOP TAIL OF WING 1 THROUGH THE LEFT SIDE OF THE (FRONT FACING) HEART BETWEEN ROUND 6 AND 7 AND THE BOTTOM TAIL BETWEEN ROUNDS 7 AND 8, TIE TAILS SNUGLY TOGETHER INSIDE THE HEART TO SECURE WINGS, REPEAT WITH WING 2 ON RIGHT SIDE OF HEART *SEE PICTURES BELOW*

You do not have to be exact with the placement of your wings. Pull the top tail between rounds 6 and 7 on the side of the heart (slightly more toward the back than front).

Pull the bottom tail between rounds 7 and 8 in vertical alignment with the top tail. Tie the tails together tightly inside the heart to secure the wings.

With wings attached.

Round 10: sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc2tog over next 4 sc, sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog, sc in next 4 sc, join with ss to initial sc, ch1. ( 18)

Round 11: 3 sc, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc2tog over next 4 sc, sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc join with ss to initial sc, ch1. ( 14 sc)

*STUFF THE HEART FIRMLY*

Round 12: 2 sc, sc2tog, sc in next 1 sc, 2 sc2tog over next 4 sc, sc in next 1 sc, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc, join with ss to initial sc, ch1. (10 sc)

*EMBROIDER SMILE WITH CONTRASTING YARN SLIGHTLY OFF CENTER OVER (THE MIDDLE HALVES OF BOTH ROUNDS) ROUND 11-12 * *SEE PICTURE BELOW*

Stitch the mouth over rounds 11 and 12. I like to make the mouth small using 3 stitches slightly off center. You can use embroidery thread or yarn.

Round 13: sc2tog around until last round, join with ss, FO leaving a small tail for sewing (5 sc)

Sew hole closed with tail and weave in end.
