Hearts in a Row Slouchy Hat

Gauge Note: This pattern can be resized by switching to a smaller gauge yarn and hook (switch to light weight yarn and use a 4mm hook) if a smaller size (toddler) is desired. The band is quite stretchy allowing most adults and children to wear this hat as written (using a 5mm). 

 

Pattern Note: Hat is worked from the band up. 

Materials:

~100-150 yds of base color worsted weight yarn

Less than 100 yds of heart color worsted weight yarn

5mm hook

Tapestry needle

Scissors

Abbreviations: 

sc=single crochet

dc=double crochet

tc=treble crochet

htc= half treble crochet (yo twice, insert hook in desired stitch and draw up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops, yo and pull through 3 loops)

fsc= foundation single crochet

dc2tog=double crochet 2 together (decrease)

sc2tog=single crochet 2 together (decrease)

ss= slip stitch

standing dc= standing double crochet (can be replaced with ch 2 if desired)

extended standing dc= extended standing double crochet (ch 2, then standing dc at the top of the chain)

fpdc= front post double crochet

BLO=back loop only

FO=fasten off

Pattern:

Round 1: -using base color- fsc 60, join with ss. (60 fsc)

 

Round 2: standing dc, dc in each ch around, join with ss. (60 dc)

 

Round 3-7: standing dc, fpdc around next dc, *dc in next dc, fpdc around next dc* repeat around, join with ss. (60 stitches)

 

Round 8: -change to heart color- (BLO extended standing dc, ch 1, htc)  in same stitch as join, *skip next 2 stitches, (BLO htc, ch 1, BLO htc) in next stitch*, repeat from * to * around, join with ss. (20 v stitches around) SEE PICTURE BELOW

Round 9: -change to base color- standing dc from same stitch as join between the first and last hearts of the previous round, skip extended standing dc, 2 dc in ch 1 space, skip htc, *dc between next 2 htc (do not stitch into htc, skip instead), 2 dc in ch 1 space*, repeat around, join with ss. SEE PICTURE BELOW

Round 10-11: standing dc in same stitch as join, dc in each dc around, join with ss.

 

Round 12-15: repeat Rounds 8- 11.

 

Round 16-17: repeat Rounds 8-9. SEE PICTURE BELOW

Round 18: standing dc in same stitch as join, dc in next 3, dc2tog over next 2 dc, *dc in next 4 dc, dc2tog*, repeat *to* around, join with ss. (50 stitches)

 

Round 19: standing dc in same stitch as join, dc in next 2, dc2tog over next 2 dc, *dc in next 3 dc, dc2tog*, repeat *to* around, join with ss. (40 stitches)

 

Round 20: -change to heart color- (BLO extended standing dc, htc)  in same stitch as join, *skip next 2 stitches, (2 BLO htc) in next stitch*, repeat from * to * around skipping last 3 stitches, join with ss. (13 v stitches)

 

Round 21: -change to base color- standing dc from same stitch as join between the first and last hearts of the previous round, skip extended standing dc, dc between standing dc and next htc, skip htc, *dc between next 2 htc (do not stitch into htc, skip instead), dc between next 2 htc*, repeat around, join with ss. (26 stitches)

 

Round 22: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, sc in next 4 stitches, sc2tog, *sc in next 5 stitches, sc2tog* repeat around until last 5 stitches, sc in last 5 stitches, join with ss, FO. (23 stitches)SEE PICTURE BELOW

-Heart on crown is worked in ROWS rather than ROUNDS. The rows are attached via ss to ROUND 21 in 5 places (bottom point,  both sides, and on top of each "bump" of the heart)

 

ROW 1: -using heart color- Attach yarn to same stitch as join using BLOss, ch 4, skip 4 stitches to the RIGHT of BLO ss, place BLOss in next stitch (5th stitch to the right of join) PICTURE A,  place 5 tc in same stitch as initial join (same place you started) to create a fan, skip 4 stitches to the LEFT of the initial BLOss, place BLOss in next stitch (5th stitch to the left of join). This fan will create the bottom “point” of the heart PICTURE B. SEE PICTURES A AND PICTURE B BELOW

-TURNING INSTRUCTIONS: turn your work 180° so that the heart “point” is facing away from you (like a rooftop). You will be stitching into the tops of the these stitches to complete the 2 “bumps” that form the top of the heart. 

 

-Final ROW note: I have included pictures within the row for clarity. I will be refer to ROUND 21 (last ROUND worked) as this is the ROUND to which you will attach (tack) your heart.

 

FINAL ROW: hdc in 1st tc, dc in next tc, dc in same tc BUT before moving on skip 4 stitches of ROUND 21 counting from the tc you started this row in, BLOss in the 5th stitch of ROUND 21 to “tack” your heart to ROUND 21, SEE PICTURE C dc in the SAME tc (you should have 3 dc in this stitch including the 1 that is tacked), (hdc, ss) in next tc, -first “bump” is complete!- SEE PICTURE D (Row continued BELOW)

-start 2nd “bump”- (ss, hdc) in next tc, dc in next tc but skip next 3 stitches of ROUND 21, BLOss in next stitch (4th)  to tack the 2nd “bump” to ROUND 21, SEE PICTURE E

 

dc in the SAME tc (you should have 3 dc in this stitch including the 1 that is tacked), (hdc, ss)  in the top ch of starting ch from ROW 1, FO -2nd bump completed! (Woohoo!!)- SEE PICTURE F
