Quick Apple Beanie Hat

Materials:

1 skein super bulky weight yarn

9mm hook

Minimal green worsted weight yarn (for leaf)

Minimal brown worsted weight yarn (for stem)

5mm hook

Tapestry needle

scissors

 

Abbreviations:

fsc=foundation single crochet

sc=single crochet

ss=slip stitch

hdc=half double crochet

fpsc=front post single crochet

fphdc=front post half double crochet

fpdc=front post double crochet

sc2tog=single crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)

hdc2tog=half double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)

ch=chain

BLO=back loop only

FO=fasten off

Size Note: This pattern as written will fit most children and adults as the fsc allow for quite a stretchy band. To size down for a toddler begin with 40 fpsc and skip Round 11. Complete all other rounds as written. To size down for a baby begin with 30 fpsc. Skip Rounds 8-12. Complete all other rounds as written. 

 

Pattern: Starting at the brim and working up...

Round 1: 44 fsc, join with ss. (44 fsc)

Round 2: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, sc around, join with ss. (44 sc)

Round 3-10: ch 1, hdc in each stitch around, join with ss. (44 hdc)

Round 11: hdc in same stitch as join, hdc in next 8 stitches, hdc2tog, *hdc in next 9 stitches, hdc2tog*, repeat *to* around, join with ss. (40 hdc)

Round 12: hdc in same stitch as join, hdc in next stitch, hdc2tog, *hdc in next 2 stitches, hdc2tog*, repeat *to* around, join with ss. (30 hdc)

Round 13: ch 1, hdc in same stitch as join, hdc2tog, *hdc in next stitch, hdc2tog*, repeat *to* around, join with ss. (20 hdc)

Round 14: ch 1, hdc2tog beginning in same stitch as join, hdc2tog around, join with ss. (10 hdc)

Round 15: ch 1, sc2tog beginning in same stitch as join, sc2tog around, join with ss. (5 sc)

*Switch to worsted weight yarn and 5mm hook*

Round 16: join yarn with standing sc to any sc of previous round, sc in same sc, *2 sc in next sc* repeat *to* around, join with ss. (10 sc) SEE PICTURE BELOW

Round 17: ch 1, sc2tog beginning in same stitch as join, sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog, join with ss. (8 sc)

Round 18: ch 1, sc2tog beginning in same stitch as join, sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog, join with ss. (6 sc)

Round 19: ch 1, sc2tog beginning in same stitch as join, 2sc in next 2sc, sc2tog, join with ss. (6 sc)

Round 20: ch 1, sc2tog beginning in same stitch as join, 2sc in next 2sc, sc2tog, join with ss. (6 sc)

Round 21: ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, sc in next sc, hdc in next 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc, join with ss. (4 sc, 2hdc)

*Use super bulky yarn and a 9mm hook for these rounds!*

INSIDE ROUND 1: 2 fpsc around each hdc2tog of Round 14, join with ss. (20 fpsc)

INSIDE ROUND 2: ch 1 sc in each fpsc in same stitch as join and each fpsc around, join with ss. (20 sc) SEE PICTURE BELOW

 These rounds will allow the stem to sink down slightly for a more realistic apple shape.

Leaf:

*Use worsted weight yarn and a 5mm hook for the leaf*

Ch 8

Round 1: working into the back bumps of each ch SEE PICTURE A...skip 1st ch, ss in next ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, 2 hdc in next ch, turn to work along front of ch, SEE PICTURE B 2 BLO hdc next ch, BLO dc in next 3 ch, BLO hdc in next ch, BLO sc in next ch, BLO ss in last ch. SEE PICTURE C (BELOW)

Stitch into the BACK BUMPS instead of the front of the ch.

The 2 sets of hdc will turn your work so you can stitch into the other side of the leaf. Using the BLO will create the vein down the center of the leaf
