Scrap Stripe "Viking" Horn Hat

Materials:

~75-100 yds worsted weight yarn made up of 9 different colors (this is a GREAT way to use up those scraps and project leftovers!)

6mm hook for adult size

5.5mm hook for child size

5mm hook for baby size

4mm hook for horns

Tapestry needle

Stitch markers if desired

Abbreviations:

Foundation sc=foundation single crochet

sc=single crochet

hdc=half double crochet

dc=double crochet

htc=half treble crochet

tc=treble crochet

BLO=back loop only

ss=slip stitch

ch=chain

YO=yarn over

FO=fasten off

mr=magic ring

RS=right side (side of fabric you want to show)

WS=wrong side (side of fabric that will be the inside of the hat)

fphdc=front post half double crochet

fpsc=front post single crochet

sc2tog=single crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)

 

hdc2tog=half double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)

bphdc2tog=back post half double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)

fpsc=front post single crochet

fphdc=front post half double crochet

fpdc=front post double crochet

fphtc=front post half treble crochet

fptc=front post treble crochet

fpqc=front post quad crochet (YO 3 times, insert hook behind desired stitch, YO and draw up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops 4 times)

 

Special Stitches: 

Bobble stitch= *YO, draw up a loop, draw through 2 loops* (2 loops left on your hook), repeat *to* 4 more times (6 loops left on your hook), YO and draw through all 6 loops on your hook.

Crab stitch=insert hook in stitch to the RIGHT (opposite of your usual direction, so LEFT FOR LEFTIES), draw up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops

 

Size Note: Use a 6mm hook for an adult. For a child size use a 5.5mm hook  and skip Rounds 11-12. For a baby size use a 5 mm hook and skip Round 11-12. 

 

Pattern Note: Worked from the brim up. This pattern is a great way to use up scraps!

 

Pattern

The X stripe:

Starting with color A

Round 1: 60 foundation sc, join with ss, ch 1. (60 stitches)

Round 2: hdc in each ch around, join with ss, *change to color B*, ch 1. (60 stitches)

Round 3: BLO hdc around, join with ss, ch 1. (60 stitches)

Round 4: hdc around, join with ss, *change back to color A*, ch 1. (60 stitches)

Round 5: *hdc in next stitch (same stitch as join for first set), counting on Round 2 skip 3 stitches from the stitch corresponding with the last made hdc of Round 5 and fpqc around the next hdc of Round 2 *SEE PICTURE 1* , skip the next hdc of round 5, hdc in next 2 hcd of round 5, fpqc around 1st skipped stitch on Round 2 to complete the X *SEE PICTURE 2*, skip next stitch of round 5, hdc in next hdc of round 5*, repeat * to * around, join with ss, ch 1. (60 stitches)

PICTURE 1: You can count the skipped stitches along the bottom edge of your hat (the grey round pictured). Skip the marked stitches. Remember that you will place the fpqc AROUND the POST of the stitch following these marked stitches. 

PICTURE 2: fpqc around the marked stitch (rightmost 1st skipped stitch in PICTURE 1).

Round 6: sc around, join with ss, ch 1. (60 stitches) *SEE PICTURE 3*

PICTURE 3: Completed X Stripe section.  

Begin the DC track stripe section...

Round 7: *change to color C* BLO dc around, join with ss, ch 1, remove hook from loop BUT DO NOT FO LOOP. Ignore the loop for now. You will return to it for round 9. (60 stitches)

Round 8: *using color D* join with a standing fpsc around any dc of round 7, fpsc around each dc around, FO, *SEE PICTURE 4*join using invisible join technique.

PICTURE 4

Round 9: pick up dropped loop from round 7 *change to color C*, dc in each dc of round 7 (ignore round 8, you will not be stitching in to round 8), join with ss, ch 1, remove hook from loop BUT DO NOT FO LOOP. Ignore the loop for now. You will return to it for round 11. (60 stitches)

Round 10: *using color D* repeat round 8. (60 stitches)

Round 11: pick up dropped loop from round 9 *change to color C*, dc in each dc of round 9 (ignore round 10, you will not be stitching into round 10), join with ss, ch 1, remove hook from loop BUT DO NOT FO LOOP. Ignore the loop for now. You will return to it for round 13. (60 stitches)

Round 12: *using color D* repeat round 8. (60 stitches)

Round 13: pick up dropped loop from round 11 *change to color C*, sc in each dc of round 9 around, join with ss. (60 stitches) *SEE PICTURE 5*

Begin bumpy stripe section….

Round 14-15: *TURN HAT INSIDE OUT SO WS IS FACING YOU and change to color E* join with standing sc, sc in each stitch around, join with ss, ch 1. (60 stitches)

Round 16: WITH WS FACING YOU (sc in next 2 stitches using color E,  *changing to color F*, bobble stitch, *change back to color E*, sc in the next 2 stitches), repeat ( to ) around, join with ss using original color only then *change to new color*, ch 1. (60 stitches)

Round 17-18: WITH WS FACING YOU and using color E* sc in each stitch around, join with ss, ch 1. (60

Round 19: TURN SO THAT RS IS FACING YOU and change to color G, *BLO sc in next stitch, BLO hdc in next stitch, BLO dc in next stitch, BLO htc in next stitch, BLO tc in next 2 stitches, BLO htc in next stitch, BLO dc in next stitch, BLO hdc in next stitch, BLO sc in next stitch,* repeat around, join with invisible join technique. (60 stitches) 

Round 20: *using color D* standing bpsc around any tc followed by htc, bphdc around next htc, bpdc around next dc, bphtc around next hdc, bptc around next 2 sc, bphtc around next hdc, bpdc around next dc, bphdc around next htc, bpsc around next tc* repeat around, join with invisible join technique. Round 17: *change to color H* join with standing BLO sc, BLO sc around, join with ss, ch 1 (60 stitches)

Round 18: *sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog* repeat around, join with ss, ch 1 (48 stitches)

Round 19: *bphdc in next 2 sc, bphdc2tog* repeat around, join with ss, ch 1(36 stitches)

Round 20: sc around, FO,  join with invisible join technique. (36 stitches) *SEE PICTURE 10*

Round 21: *change to color A* attach with a ss to any stitch on round 18 (this round will be facing out because of the post stitching), crab stitch into each stitch of round 18 around, FO join with invisible join technique. (36 stitches) *SEE PICTURE 11*

Round 22: *change to color I* ch 1, *BLO hdc, BLO hdc2tog* repeat around, join with ss, ch 1. (24 stitches)

Round 23: *use color I* (standing for 1st set dc, dc2tog *change to color A*, fpdc *change back to color I*), repeat around, join with ss, ch 1 (18 stitches) SEE PICTURE 12

Round 5: sc2tog, 2sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog, join with ss, ch 1. (10 stitches) 

Round 6: sc2tog, sc in next sc, 2sc in next 4 sc, sc in next sc, sc2tog, join with ss, ch 1. (12 stitches)

Round 7: sc in next 4 sc, 2sc in next 4 sc, sc in next 4 sc, join with ss, ch 1. (14 stitches)

Round 14-16: sc around, join with ss, ch1, (20 stitches)

Round 20: *using a color A* attach yarn using fpsc to any sc of previous round, fpsc around, join using invisible join technique. (30 stitches)

Round 20: *continuing with color A * Attach using a standing sc into any stitch in round 18, sc around, join with ss, ch 1. (30)

Finishing:

Stuff the horns firmly. Sew on horns between the bumpy stripe section and the track stripe section. Weave in all ends. SEE PICTURE 16
